1st BC Annual Corporate Chess Challenge (9th Mar, 2025)

Calling all corporate professionals! It is time to kill the workplace boredom with a fresh flavor of Chess. Fraser Valley Chess Academy is hosting the first edition of the BC Annual Corporate Chess Championship, where office teams face off not in business, but in chess. This is a great opportunity to challenge and network with other professionals through a little friendly battle. Who will rise above the competition, claim the trophy, and prove their company has the sharpest minds in the game of chess? Whether you represent a startup or a small-scale business, a medium-sized company or a MNC – this is your chance to shine for your organization!

This tournament is proudly sponsored by CoWork by Elevate, Langley. It is open to all skill levels including non-BC residents. There is no minimum or maximum number of players required to participate per organization. Employees can directly sign up individually using the registration form below. Up to top 4 players from each company shall be able to contribute towards the company team total points – which shall decide the trophy for the “2025 Corporate Chess Challenge”.

**FREE ENTRY to all players rated 2300+ under any rating system. Entry fee to be deducted from prize money upon winning/ if applicable.

All withdrawal/ refund requests must be submitted by this deadline. Note that a $10 processing fee will apply to all refunds.

Scoring System for SD & School prizes:
Each individual win = 1 point, Draw = 1/2 point, Loss = 0 point.
All tied players receives a cash prize split if applicable. Up to top 4 players from each company shall be able to contribute towards the company team total points.

Unrated players who have opted to obtain their CFC membership on their own, must complete the same before round 1 starts and submit their CFC ID via email to us. Failure to do so may result in denied entry.

Note: Players do not receive a bonus time for the 1st illegal move from their opponent, while it is considered a warning and the 2nd illegal move shall lead to forfeit/ game loss. All other FIDE rules are applicable throughout the tournament.

The CFC (Canadian Chess Federation) represents Canada to the world as a member of FIDE, the international chess body. As a CFC member, you have access to all CFC rated events across Canada, and will obtain national CFC chess ratings. There are two types of CFC ratings: Regular, and Quick. Long story short, all tournaments with long games (60+ min per player) use your CFC regular rating. Tournaments with shorter games (< 60 min per player) use your CFC quick rating. Policies and Guidelines:

1. Active CFC membership is required to play. We assist with CFC membership registration along with tournament entry. This tournament uses CFC Quick ratings.
2. You may request a full refund before registration closes. No refunds after that.
3. We reserve the right to move players to the appropriate section based on their grades.
4. You may request a maximum of two ½ point byes.
No byes on Round 6(requests for a bye on Round 6 will be ignored, or you will receive a 0-point bye).
5. No food or beverages allowed during a live match.
6. Photos are allowed, but please be discrete and respectful to not disturb players.
7. Silence is required in the playing area while games are in progress. Parents assisting their kids/ suggesting moves will lead to IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION OF THE PLAYER.
8. Any player/ parent/ guardian with frequent coughing, sneezing, other visible symptoms of illness may be asked to withdraw from the tournament/ leave the premises.
9. If you have experienced COVID-19 or its symptoms in past 14 days, we request you to voluntarily withdraw from the tournament for health and safety of all our patrons. Face masks are recommended for all.
10. All electronics capable of making noise, communicating, or playing chess must be switched off while playing and should not be placed on the table during the live rounds.
11. Anyone entering the venue premises consents to being photographed/ videos recorded. This footage may be used for internal references, social media marketing or promotional purposes. If you do not wish to be clicked/ recorded/ promoted – you may contact us via email and we will take care of your request.
12. In the event of a tie, prize money split evenly among everyone tied for that position. Tiebreak for non-cash prizes decided by:
a. Head-to-head score of tied players
b. Cumulative score of opponents
13. Decision of the Tournament Director will be final in the event of a conflict. The final standings declared after tournament completion cannot be altered or changed.
14. The CFC website does not factor custom tie-breaks used at individual tournaments while updating ratings. The sequence of players displayed on CFC website may be based on player’s overall “performance” rating or random (NOT as per tournament final standings issued by organizers/ TD).
