Did you know that July 20th is celebrated as World Chess Day? We are excited to introduce the 1st Annual World Chess Day Championship. It is a 6 round CFC-rated Classical tournament + Bonus 8-round CFC-rated Blitz with guaranteed prizes worth $3000. Various spot prizes including 1 free entry to Langley Open 2024 that will be held on Labor Day weekend at the Douglas Park Elementary School in Langley!

The event details and schedule is as follows:
Format: Classical (50 min + 10 sec increment per move) & Bonus Blitz (3 min + 2 sec increment per move). For the Classical section, you can pick between OPEN, U1400 & U900 sections. We may add an additional section/ or adjust the sections based on the number of entries. Participation in the Blitz Open tournament is optional at no extra entry fee.

Early-bird entry fee: $80 + GST, until May 21st, 2024.
Entry fee $90 + GST after early bird closes. Registration deadline is Jul 19th, 2024 midnight.

Location: Trinity Western University, 22500 University Dr, Langley Twp, BC V2Y 1Y1
Main playing area: Robert G. Kuhn Building, Room # 116 (First floor).
– Ample indoor waiting area for parents/ visitors.
– On-site restaurant: Starbucks adjacent to the waiting area.

Schedule: 6 rounds CFC-rated Classical (3 rounds per day).
Time control: 50 min + 10 sec increment per move

Day 1 (July 20th, 2024):
Round 1: 9:30am to 11:30am
Round 2: 12:15pm to 2:15pm
Round 3: 3pm to 5pm

Day 2 (July 21st, 2024):
Round 4: 9:30am to 11:30am
Round 5: 12:15pm to 2:15pm
Round 6: 3pm to 5pm

8-round Blitz (CFC-rated)
Time control: 3 min + 2 sec increment per move

Day 1 (July 20th): Rounds 1 to 4 – 5:30pm to 6:30pm (or ASAP)
Day 2 (July 21st): Rounds 5 to 8 – 5:30pm to 6:30pm (or ASAP)
Prize ceremony: 6:30pm (or ASAP), Jul 21st, 2024.

Unrated players who have opted to obtain their CFC membership on their own, must complete the same before round 1 starts and submit their CFC ID via email to us. Failure to do so may result in denied entry.

This tournament follows all FIDE rules of Chess as per the applicable formats. Also refer the FIDE handbook

Policies and Guidelines:

1. A valid FIDE membership is mandatory for participation.
2. We’ll be using FIDE rules. For more information, Refer to FIDE Handbook.
3. A full refund can be requested until the registration deadline. No refunds will be issued after that time.
4. You are allowed a maximum of two byes (equal to 1/2 point each). Please note that no byes are permitted in Round 7, and requests for a bye in that round will be disregarded, resulting in a 0-point bye.
5. During live matches, the consumption of food or beverages is not permitted.
6. Photos and videos are allowed during the rounds, but we kindly request that you be discreet and respectful so as not to disturb other players.
7. Maintaining silence in the playing area is mandatory while games are in progress. Parents assisting their children or suggesting moves will lead to IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION OF THE PLAYER.
8. Any individual, including players, parents, or guardians, displaying frequent coughing, sneezing, or other visible symptoms of illness/ COVID-19 may be asked to withdraw from the tournament or leave the premises. Face masks are recommended for all attendees.
If you have experienced COVID-19 or its symptoms within the past 14 days, we kindly request that you voluntarily withdraw from the tournament for the health and safety of all participants.
9. All electronic devices capable of making noise, communicating, or playing chess must be turned off while playing and should not be placed on the table during live rounds.
10. By entering the venue premises, you consent to be photographed or recorded in videos. This footage may be used for internal references, social media marketing, or promotional purposes. If you prefer not to be photographed, recorded, or promoted, you can contact us via email, and we will accommodate your request.
11. In the event of a tie, prize money will be evenly split among all individuals tied for that position. Tiebreaks for non-cash prizes will be determined in the following order:
a. Average rating of the opponent
b. Buchholtz
The decision of the Tournament Director is final in the event of a conflict. The final standings announced after the tournament cannot be altered or changed.
