Go Beyond the Game!

Fraser Valley Chess Academy is inspired by the profound passion for the game of Chess in the form of its Head Coach – Umang Banatwala. Originally from Mumbai, India; Umang has been fortunate to get an opportunity to learn chess from an experienced mentor; Coach Subhash Honmurgi; who laid the building blocks for his journey as a chess player. Umang has participated in various Chess tournaments and represented his college and university at competitive events.

Our Mission

At FVCA, our mission is to make learning and fun come together and help create a long-lasting impression on our students and their families. We don’t just teach our students how to play Chess – we want to preach how to go beyond the game!

FVCA’s unique curriculum nurtures problem solving skills, builds confidence to handle pressure situations with a calm mind and uncovers the hidden potential of the human brain.

Umang is currently the Secretary of the BC Chess Federation and an active CFC (Canadian Federation of Chess) member. He moved to Canada in 2018 and has revived his long lasting passion and dedication for the game. His vision is to spread the awareness of Chess in local youth and motivate them to “go beyond the game”. FVCA is rapidly expanding its team and looking for more coaches across the Fraser Valley, interested candidates can email us at info@fraservalleychess.com.
