In partnership with Cambridge Elementary School PAC team, Fraser Valley Chess Academy is excited to bring back the Surrey Junior Rapid series this year. This time, we welcome chess players from KG all the way up to G12 across BC. Various prizes to be won in both sections, including a free entry to BC Inter-School Chess Championship 2025 for the top player of each section.

This is also an official qualifier tournament for the 2025 Canadian Youth Chess Championship. CYCC is a prestigious national event that, after more than a decade, is being held in Surrey once again this July. Participation is only through qualifier tournaments. Players scoring 50% or higher in this tournament can qualify to enter the CYCC.

Main playing area: School gym.

Format: Swiss Rapid with a total of 6 rounds. Time control: 15 min + 10 sec increment.
Event type: CFC Quick Rated/OTB

Schedule: 6 rounds
– Arrival and check-in: From 9:15 am to 9:30 am.
– Orientation session & pairings: 9:45 am to 10 am.
– Round 1: 10am or ASAP.
– Round 2: 11am.
– Round 3: 12pm.
– Lunch break from 12:45pm to 1:25pm.
– Round 4: 1:30pm.
– Round 5: 2:30pm.
– Round 6: 3:30pm.
– Prize ceremony: 4:30 pm or ASAP.

Sections:
OPEN (CFC Rated): Recommended for rated players/ intermediate to advanced players.
U1500 (CFC Rated): Recommended for beginners/ unrated/ first time players.

Tournament Fee: $45 + GST.
Registration deadline: April 11th, 2025 at midnight.
All withdrawal/ refund requests must be submitted by this deadline. No refunds after registration closes/ for no-shows & withdrawals. Note that a $10 processing fee will apply to all refunds. No on-site registration.

There will be a concession stand available from 11 am to 3 pm
Parents can watch the live games while their children plays in the gym or wait in the school common area.
Free parking inside school premises or in the neighborhood.

Note: Players do not receive a bonus time for the 1st illegal move from their opponent, while it is considered a warning and the 2nd illegal move shall lead to forfeit/ game loss. All other FIDE rules are applicable throughout the tournament.

Policies and Guidelines:

1. Active CFC membership is required to play. We assist with CFC membership registration along with tournament entry. This tournament uses CFC Quick ratings.
2. You may request a full refund before registration closes. No refunds after that.
3. We reserve the right to move players to the appropriate section based on their grades. For ex: if a player is Unrated for “Quick” tournaments but has more than 1500 rating points under “Regular” – they qualify to play under U2000 section only. This is to be fair with all players in both sections and to avoid sandbagging.
4. You may request a maximum of two ½ point byes.
No byes on Round 9 & 10 (requests for a bye on Round 9 & 10 will be ignored, or you will receive a 0-point bye).
5. No food or beverages allowed during a live match.
6. Photos are allowed, but please be discrete and respectful to not disturb players.
7. Silence is required in the playing area while games are in progress. Parents assisting their kids/ suggesting moves will lead to IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION OF THE PLAYER.
8. Any player/ parent/ guardian with frequent coughing, sneezing, other visible symptoms of illness may be asked to withdraw from the tournament/ leave the premises.
9. If you have experienced COVID-19 or its symptoms in past 14 days, we request you to voluntarily withdraw from the tournament for health and safety of all our patrons. Face masks are recommended for all.
10. All electronics capable of making noise, communicating, or playing chess must be switched off while playing and should not be placed on the table during the live rounds.
11. Anyone entering the venue premises consents to being photographed/ videos recorded. This footage may be used for internal references, social media marketing or promotional purposes. If you do not wish to be clicked/ recorded/ promoted – you may contact us via email and we will take care of your request.
12. In the event of a tie, prize money split evenly among everyone tied for that position. Tiebreak for non-cash prizes decided by:
a. Head-to-head score of tied players
b. Cumulative score of opponents
c. Armageddon Blitz 5|4
13. Decision of the Tournament Director will be final in the event of a conflict. The final standings declared after tournament completion cannot be altered or changed.
14. The CFC website does not factor custom tie-breaks used at individual tournaments while updating ratings. The sequence of players displayed on CFC website may be based on player’s overall “performance” rating or random (NOT as per tournament final standings issued by organizers/ TD).
