3rd Annual BC Inter-School Chess Championship (May 31 – June 1, 2025)

Welcome to the 3rd Annual BC Inter-School Junior Chess Championship! This year we are hosting this event at the HD Stafford Middle School campus in Langley, BC. A wonderful opportunity for school chess clubs to compete as a team and win prizes in the Rapid/ Classical/ Blitz sections. Top games from each section will be broadcasted LIVE on social media.

Guaranteed prizes are worth $2000 plus medals and trophies for individual/ best school positions. Various other spot prizes and certificate of participation for all players. Students across G1-12 can register via school sponsorship or parents can register directly (players get to represent their school in either case). Main playing area: Main Gym

Registration Deadline: May 29th, 2025 at midnight.
No onsite registration. No refunds after registration closes/ for no-shows or withdrawals. A $10 processing fee will apply to all refunds.

Section A: Grades 1 to 4 RAPID (CFC Quick Rated, 6 rounds)
Format: Swiss Rapid: 15 min + 10 sec per move increment.
Early Bird Entry fee: $40 + GST per player (applicable to registrations on and before March 31st, 2025)
Regular Entry fee: $50 + GST per player

May 31st, 2024 (Saturday) – Arrive by 9:30am
Round 1: 10am; Round 2: 11am; Round 3: 12pm
Lunch break from 12:45 pm to 1:45 pm
Round 4: 2pm; Round 5: 3pm; Round 6: 4pm

Section B: Grades 5 to 8 CLASSICAL (CFC Regular Rated, 6 rounds): 2 days event
Format: Swiss Classical: 55 min + 5 sec per move increment
Early Bird Entry fee: $80 + GST per player (applicable to registrations on and before March 31st, 2025)
Regular Entry fee: $90 + GST per player

May 31st, 2024 (Saturday) – Arrive by 9am.
Round 1: 9:30am to 11:30am; Round 2: 12:15pm to 2:15pm; Round 3: 3pm to 5pm

June 1st, 2024 (Sunday) – Arrive by 9:15am
Round 4: 9:30am to 11:30am; Round 5: 12:15pm to 2:15pm; Round 6: 3pm to 5pm

Section C: Grades 9 to 12 BLITZ (CFC Quick Rated, 12 rounds)
Format: Swiss Blitz: 5 min + 2 sec per move increment
Early Bird Entry fee: $40 + GST per player (applicable to registrations on and before March 31st, 2025)
Regular Entry fee: $50 + GST per player

June 1st, 2024 (Sunday) – Arrive by 9:30am.
Round 1: 10am; Round 2: 10:30am; Round 3: 11am; Round 4: 11:30am; Round 5: 12pm; Round 6: 12:30pm
Lunch break from 12:45 pm to 1:45 pm
Round 7: 2pm; Round 8: 2:30pm; Round 9: 3pm; Round 10: 3:30pm; Round 11: 4pm; Round 12: 4:30pm

Prize Ceremony at 5:30pm (or ASAP) on June 1st, 2025 (Sunday) for all sections.

Scoring System for SD & School prizes:
Rapid: Each win = 1 point, Draw = 1/2 point, Loss = 0 point.
Classical: Each win = 2 points, Draw = 1 point, Loss = 0 point.
Blitz: Each win = 1 point, Draw = 1/2 point, Loss = 0 point.
Up to top 5 players from each school shall be able to contribute towards the school team points.
All tied players from each section receive a Medal of recognition + cash prize split.

The CFC (Canadian Chess Federation) represents Canada to the world as a member of FIDE, the international chess body. As a CFC member, you have access to all CFC rated events across Canada, and will obtain national CFC chess ratings. There are two types of CFC ratings: Regular, and Quick. Long story short, all tournaments with long games (60+ min per player) use your CFC regular rating. Tournaments with shorter games (< 60 min per player) use your CFC quick rating. They are different ratings and do NOT overlap. This tournament uses CFC Quick ratings**
