Fraser Valley Chess Academy is excited to host the 2025 BC Closed and BC Women’s Championship at a new central venue at the Comfort Inn & Suites, Surrey, BC Thanksgiving long weekend! Alongside these prestigious tournaments, we will be organizing Thanksgiving Open, a 7 rounds 90 + 30 classical tournament open to everyone that will run concurrently to the BC Closed.

Player cannot participate in more than one tournament, as all tournament are scheduled to happen at the same time.

2026 BC Closed Championship is an 8 player invitation only tournament, where the top 8 chess players from BC would compete for the title of the BC Champion in 2025. IA Steven Wright shall shortlist the candidate and invite them. The list of players will be updated on this page once we receive their confirmation. The final qualifier of the year is Langley Open 2026, whose winner can reserve a seat at the BC Closed, if they’re not already qualified. It features 7 rounds of round-robin, 1 round on Friday, followed by 2 rounds per day to follow. There is no entry fee, with $2000 in prize money.

2026 BC Women’s Championship is a FIDE + CFC-rated tournament, where women players in BC compete for the title of BC Women’s Champion. It features 6 rounds of 90 + 30 Swiss classical. To begin on Saturday, October 10th, 2 rounds per day. All female players above a CFC rating of 1800 qualifies for a free entry, and players under 1800 can register with an entry fee. The prize pool for this tournament is $1000.

Thanksgiving Open 2026 is a FIDE + CFC-rated Swiss classical tournament, featuring 7 rounds of 90 + 30 classical played over 3 days, beginning Friday, October 9th, 2 rounds per day. Early bird entry fee is $110 + GST until August 15th, 2025.

We accept refund requests until October 8th, midnight. A $25 processing fee applies to all refunds. No refunds will be processed after the registration deadline closes.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) is the governing body of the sport of chess, and it regulates all international chess competitions. Constituted as a non-governmental institution, it was recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a Global Sporting Organization in 1999.

The CFC (Canadian Chess Federation) represents Canada to the world as a member of FIDE, the international chess body. As a CFC member, you have access to all CFC rated events across Canada, and will obtain national CFC chess ratings. There are two types of CFC ratings: Regular, and Quick. Long story short, all tournaments with long games (60+ min per player) use your CFC regular rating. Tournaments with shorter games (< 60 min per player) use your CFC quick rating.
