JKE Winter 2025 Chess & Robotics After-School Program

Wishing all parents and students at JKE a Happy New Year 2025 in advance! The Robotics and Chess program at James Kennedy Elementary for the Winter 2025 term is here. The programs are proudly organized by the school PAC team in partnership with Zebra Robotics Langley and Fraser Valley Chess Academy.

We are making the below upgrades to our program delivery based on parent feedback to ensure best quality and services. Going forward, our programs will be offered to students grades 2 and above. Junior Robotics (Lego based coding) will not be offered at schools and only at our academy – instead it will be replaced with Robotics Engineer 1 for all students in the course (which was originally only open to grades 4+).

All G2-7 JKE students are eligible to enroll in the course regardless of whether you participated in the program last term. For returning students, we shall continue the course from where we left off. Grade 2 students learning Junior Robotics in the current/ previous terms will automatically upgrade to Robotics Engineer 1 course.

The Winter 2025 schedule is as follows:
– Robotics Engineer 1: every Wednesday, 2:30 pm to 4 pm (90 minutes): from Jan 15th, 2025 to Mar 12th, 2025 for a total of 8 sessions. (No session on Mar 5th due to early dismissal at the school).
– Naughty Knights Chess: every Friday, 2:30 pm to 4 pm (90 minutes): from Jan 17th, 2025 to March 7th, 2025 for a total of 8 sessions. 
Per student fee for each program: $200 + GST = $210
Registration deadline: Jan 10th, 2025

In order to encourage the school chess team to enter the competitive turf, we are offering booking forms to 2 our of kid’s friendly competitions in the form below. These are optional but recommended, and will allow our instructors to better prepare the students during their program. Parents can decide to register for these now or at a later time.

Terms & Conditions:
– Registration will be on a first come first serve basis for paid students only. 
– Full refund can be requested via email before the program starts. A $10 admin + processing fee deduction shall apply on all refunds. 
– After the program starts, cancellation can be accepted within the first 2 weeks with a pro-rated refund for balance sessions.  
– After week 3, there will be no refunds issued for cancellation/ drop-outs. 
– No refunds or credits for regular student absence, unless there is a long leave of absence due to emergency.

The FVCA Students & Coaches tournaments are CFC Quick rated tournaments exclusively for our students and chess coaches. Only students will be eligible for prize money.

The tournament is happening Dec 15, 2024, 10am to 2pm at Fraser Valley Chess Academy. You can find more details about this event on our tournaments page.

The Annual BC Inter-School Championship is a chance for students to represent their school in our largest tournament series. Last year, we saw over 250 players from all across BC.

The tournament is happening May 31 to Jun 1, 2025, at HD Stafford Middle School, Langley. You can find more details about this event on our tournaments page.

The CFC (Canadian Chess Federation) represents Canada to the world as a member of FIDE, the international chess body. As a CFC member, you have access to all CFC rated events across Canada, and will obtain national CFC chess ratings. There are two types of CFC ratings: Regular, and Quick. Long story short, all tournaments with long games (60+ min per player) use your CFC regular rating. Tournaments with shorter games (< 60 min per player) use your CFC quick rating. They are different ratings and do NOT overlap. This tournament uses CFC Quick ratings.
